DC reviews Trayon White’s work to interrupt violence – NBC4 Washington

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office will conduct an internal investigation into Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White’s “interactions with violence interruption programs” after he was arrested Sunday on federal bribery charges related to that work.

In a statement released Wednesday, Bowser said, “I share the deep disappointment of the people of DC and the DC Council President over the allegations made against Council Member Trayon White.”

“Violence prevention programs are a key factor in reducing violence in the neighborhoods that need it most and must operate without political interference. We know that the legal system and Council protocols are moving forward. At the same time, we will conduct an internal review of Council members’ interactions with violence prevention programs and, of course, work with law enforcement when necessary,” she continued.

White was arrested by federal authorities in the Navy Yard area on Sunday. A day later, federal prosecutors said White accepted envelopes containing $35,000 in cash and expected a total of $156,000 to pressure government officials to renew contracts for violence prevention and child welfare services. He made no admissions at his court appearance on Monday.
