A woman accuses her husband’s niece of being “reckless” and “tasteless” because she organized a wedding abroad – and then got married a month early without telling the guests.

In a post shared on August 1 in the subreddit r/weddingshaming, a Reddit user expressed frustration with the niece, whom he called “Jennifer,” for her lack of communication regarding the last-minute decision.

According to the post titled “You’re invited to our wedding! Never mind…” Jennifer announced her engagement 14 months before the wedding date.

At a wedding abroad, Jennifer and her fiancé asked guests to make reservations early to secure spots at the hotel and event, and the user complied. Seven months later, the couple “reiterated the importance of booking everything as soon as possible” in a card.

About a month before the planned wedding, the user experienced a shock when “the bride’s father casually mentioned that Jennifer had gotten married the weekend before,” she wrote, “albeit in a new venue and with very few guests.”

Of course, this information – and its nonchalant delivery – was jarring, given the reservations they had made when the couple asked months earlier.

“Up until this point, we had never been informed of any new developments or changes to the original plans!” the post said. “No map, no email, NOTHING! And since we only learned the news after the fact, it was too late to cancel our reservations and/or change our flight.”

“As a result,” she added, “we lost quite a lot of money!”

In the post, the user expressed her sympathy for the couple and acknowledged that the circumstances may have been beyond their control, but at the same time reiterated her frustration with the way they communicated – or more accurately, didn’t communicate – with their guests.

“The thing is, I understand that life goes on and sometimes plans change,” the post read. “In this case, Jennifer and her boyfriend actually had a valid reason (it’s a long story) for what they did. But I do NOT understand why we weren’t told about the change in plans before the actual new wedding!”

“I think it would have been better to inform us and the other disinvitees via mass email rather than NO communication at all,” the post concluded. “Breach of etiquette, inconsiderate and yes, in poor taste!”

The user also clarified in the comments that the wedding was not just a precursor to the originally planned ceremony – it was the only wedding.

The couple’s “stripped-down wedding was all they had,” she wrote. “They had completely canceled the original destination wedding… they just couldn’t be bothered to let most of us know!”
