Florida election websites briefly impacted by technical glitches during 2024 primary election: What happened?

The 2024 Florida primary is over and results are in, but some aspects of the voting process did not go quite according to plan Tuesday night.

Election officials’ websites in several counties reported technical difficulties with ballot submission, prompting several counties to resort to alternative means of announcing election results.

According to Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd, there appears to be a common link between the website outages. He reported that the outage was caused by a vendor called VR Systems, which provides software and hardware technology for elections.

From Hillsborough to Sarasota, Pinellas, Brevard and Lake County, among others, there were problems with the website. Representatives of the Secretary of State’s office emphasized at a press conference on Tuesday evening that the glitch had not affected the election results in any way.

“This is not a problem with the Florida Department of State’s systems,” Byrd said. “I repeat, this is not a problem with the Florida Department of State and does not impact floridaelectionwatch.gov in any way. All information and vote counts were reported to the Department of State in a timely manner and we have that information.”

In a statement from VR Systems, Chief Operating Officer Ben Martin attributed the problem to a security measure that was overloaded due to high traffic.

All websites should be back up and running smoothly by Wednesday morning. The technical difficulties will only affect access to the voting results, not the results themselves.
