Filmed by Arina Yakupova, Ma Xuefeng. Edited by Arina Yakupova, Xu Yue. Subtitles by Arina Yakupova, Xu Yue.

In this episode of Shanghai Like a Local, we explore a scenario that can happen to anyone – losing a cell phone. Losing your phone can be panic-inducing, but with the right steps, you can minimize the damage and protect your personal information. Let’s explore what you should do if you find yourself in this stressful situation.

1) Stay calm and act quickly

Above all, try not to panic. Every problem has a solution. It’s important to keep a clear head while following these steps to secure your information and limit potential damage.

2) Contact your mobile operator

Contact your mobile operator immediately to suspend your service or block your SIM card. This will protect you from unauthorized use of your data and avoid costly charges. Then go to the nearest service center with your ID to get a replacement card.

3) Secure your WeChat account

Next, lock your WeChat account to prevent access by anyone who finds or steals your phone. Borrow someone else’s phone, log in to your account, and navigate to “Me” > “Settings” > “Account & Security” > “WeChat Security Center” > “Lock Account.” After locking your account, use another device to change your passwords and secure your accounts, especially those for banking and social media. Do the same for Alipay.

4) Track or lock your phone remotely

If possible, try to track or lock your phone using its built-in location services. This will allow you to locate the phone or prevent its use until you can pick it up.

5) File a report with the police

After you have taken all the necessary steps to secure your digital life, it is important to go to the police and file a report. This official document can be helpful in insurance claims and in case of identity theft.

6) Make urgent calls

If you need to call for help urgently and are alone, look for public telephones that offer 3-minute free calls (domestic numbers only) or ask a passerby for help. Most people are willing to help in an emergency.

Remember that it is important to act quickly and calmly. Take care of yourself and stay healthy!
