For the fourth time in five Olympic Games, the United States and Brazil will meet in women’s Olympic volleyball. However, this will be the first semifinal match, as the classic rivals have previously only faced each other in the gold medal match.

When did the two last meet? In the 2021 final. The USA swept Brazil off the court to win their first gold medal at the Olympics. They also faced each other in the 2008 and 2012 finals, but Brazil took the title both times with four-set victories.

While the USA got off to a rocky start in Paris, losing to China and Serbia in five sets, the team found its rhythm in the quarterfinals against Poland. Annie Drews’ strong arm led the way with 13 points (12 kills and one block) and seven digs to complete the sweep. Avery Skinner looked anything but an Olympic newbie, scoring 12 kills and 10 digs to be the best outside attacker.

A second consecutive Olympic final will not be easy, as Brazil is ranked No. 2 in the world for a reason. They swept all their opponents in the group stage, including Kenya, Japan and Poland. The USA will rely on their tough group matches to gain experience when they compete in volleyball’s biggest rivalry.

10:09 am – The USA challenges a hard block from Washington’s top. It is unsuccessful and Brazil rolls on. It also takes the next point with a block and forces a The USA takes a timeout and now leads 8:7.

10:02 am – Ace! Skinner makes the first serve of the match and Brazil takes a time-out. The USA leads 5-0.

10:01 am – Here we go. Brazil serves first.
