Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily, entrepreneur Michael Lynch and daughter Hannah missing

Top line

A British technology entrepreneur, his daughter and the chief executive of Morgan Stanley International are reportedly among six people missing off the coast of Italy after a 184-foot luxury sailing yacht named Bayesian sank near Sicily early Monday morning as a result of bad weather conditions, including tornadoes.

Key data

According to the Italian Coast Guard, there were 22 people on board – 10 crew members and 12 passengers – including people from the United States, Britain and Canada when the boat capsized around 5 a.m. on Monday.

Fifteen people were rescued from the ship (including a one-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans, remain missing, according to multiple reports.

Michael Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur and former billionaire, is reportedly among the missing, along with his lawyer and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch (his wife Angela Bacares was rescued).

Jonathan Bloomer, CEO of Morgan Stanley International Bank and the insurance company Hiscox, is also said to be among the missing.

As authorities told the BBC on Monday, the missing people are likely still on the boat.

Local media reported that the deceased person was a crew member.

What you should pay attention to

An ongoing search operation involves divers attempting to search the ship, which is currently 50 meters below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN.

Important background

The Bayesian was anchored near Porticello Harbor on Sunday night when a severe storm hit the coast, bringing with it a “waterspout,” a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship capsized and was quickly pulled underwater by its massive mast – at 246 feet, it was the tallest aluminum mast in the world. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.

Large number

$215,000. That’s the cost of a one-week charter of the Bayesian, a single-masted sailing ship.

Key quote

“She told me that at some point while they were sleeping, the yacht capsized because of the tornado and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency department at the children’s hospital in Palermo, Italy, told the Times. “Some of them managed to get into the lifeboat immediately. And some obviously didn’t make it.”

tangent

Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after being accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating Autonomy’s value before HP bought the company for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote down $8.8 million of Autonomy’s value within a year of the purchase. Today, the Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He is “very proud” of his yacht, an employee told the British newspaper, and business records show the boat legally belongs to his wife, Bacares.
