Swansea’s Vipotnik hopes to repeat his goal in the derby

Striker Zan Vipotnik will be hoping to repeat his goal-scoring haul for Swansea City in Sunday’s South Wales derby against Cardiff City.

The 22-year-old Zipotnik scored in last Saturday’s championship win over Preston North End.

It was the Slovenian international’s first goal since signing a four-year deal with Swansea after terminating his contract with French club Bordeaux.

“I am so happy. I have been waiting for this goal for a long time,” said Vipotnik.

“I scored my last goal in May and I’m so happy to have scored in front of our fans. We got the win. I’m so happy for the team and for myself.”

Vipotnik has yet to start in the championship as he is building up his fitness after an interrupted preseason.

He is competing with Liam Cullen for the chance to lead Luke Williams’ side against Swansea’s biggest rivals.

“I scored my first goal and hope to score at least one next week,” added Vipotnik.

“That’s my job. I’m here to score goals and I hope I can do that next week. I’m so excited about the atmosphere in the stadium next week when we play Cardiff and I hope we can win.”

“I’ve heard about this game every day and I like playing these games. I love derbies.”

“We have one in Slovenia, not as big as here, but it is still a derby.”

Vipotnik moved to Swansea after Slovenia’s participation in the European Championship in Germany. There, the team reached the knockout rounds but then lost to Portugal on penalties.

Vipotnik made one appearance in the tournament, coming on as a substitute in the group stage match against Serbia.

“It was great for us, we did really well and I am so grateful to the manager who appointed me and hope I can continue,” added Vipotnik.

“When I was young, I watched Cristiano Ronaldo. He is an idol for many players because of his attitude, his way of working and his life – it’s incredible.”

“But now (Erling) Haaland is the number one striker. I like watching him, his movements, and I also like (Aleksandar) Mitrovic, he was really good in the championship. He is a Balkanian and I like him.

“Now I’m here and I think the Championship is the right step for me. It’s a tough league and I hope I get the chance to move to the Premier League.”
