Woman hit and killed by shoes on Philadelphia’s Broad Street – NBC10 Philadelphia

A woman who was struck by an SUV overnight while crossing the street after leaving a North Philadelphia supermarket lost her shoes and was thrown about 100 feet, Philadelphia police said.

The 59-year-old woman died after being struck in the 5800 block of North Broad Street late on Aug. 7, 2024, Philadelphia Police Chief Scott Small said.

“At this point, this appears to be a tragic fatal car accident – vehicle versus pedestrian,” Small said.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene shortly before midnight, Small said. They found the woman’s body on Broad Street and paramedics confirmed her death.

Police found a Subaru SUV at the scene that had stopped, and the woman driving it was still on the scene, Small said. The crash left the SUV, which was traveling northbound, with visible front-end damage.

“The victim – a 59-year-old woman – was struck with such force that she fell out of both sneakers and her body was thrown approximately 30 meters,” Small said.

Witnesses told investigators that the woman had been in a supermarket immediately before the accident.

Small said the driver did not appear to be impaired and had a valid license. It is not known whether speed played a role in the crash, he said.

The investigation continued on Thursday morning.
