Cars forced to turn around after truck fire at Gold Ranch | News

Update 2:03 p.m.

CAL FIRE is conducting airstrikes to keep the fire under control. I-80 remains closed between Colfax and SR-20.

There is currently no estimated date for the reopening.

A section of I-80 is closed due to an electric semi-trailer fire near Nyack.

Westbound cars must turn around at the Nevada state line, while eastbound traffic turns around at Applegate Street.

Traffic is diverted via SR 20.

Semi-trailers may use US 395 north to CA State Route 70 west as an alternate route.

There is no immediate word on when the stretch of I-80 will reopen. So far, it has been estimated that the roadway would reopen around 8 a.m.

According to the California Highway Patrol, no one was injured in the accident, but because the batteries in the truck were giving off toxic fumes, people had to stay a mile away from the scene until the fire was extinguished.

They also said that battery fires are very difficult to extinguish.

“You either need a dry chemical or very large amounts of water, I’ve heard up to 40,000 gallons or so,” says Ofc. Jason Lyman of CHP Gold Run.
