Lakers’ LeBron James hints he may pursue a new sport after his retirement

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James joked in his recent Instagram stories about playing college football after retiring from the NBA. The statement sparked speculation about James’ impending retirement.

Although James was clearly joking, the Instagram post featured 29-year-old Monte Harrison, who made his way from the MLB to college football at the University of Arkansas. Harrison played 50 games in the major leagues and spent time with both the Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Angels. Now, Harrison is starting a new journey in the college game as a true first-year wide receiver.

James contributed to this remarkable story by adding his own version to the narrative. The basketball star went straight to the NBA after playing basketball in high school. James never attended college, so the idea that he could play college football is technically possible.

In addition, James has always been a multi-sport athlete. His size and build make him a comparable tight end on any team in the NFL.

James, who is currently celebrating his 40th birthday, is the oldest active player in the NBA. What’s incredible about James is that after two decades in the league, he’s still able to put up numbers.

NBA Hall of Famer Charley Barkley believes James should hang up his jersey sooner rather than later.

“I hope he retires while he can still play. I saw Michael Jordan with the Wizards, it wasn’t pretty,” Barkley said, via ESPN. “I saw Patrick Ewing with the Orlando Magic. Frankly, I’d rather see him (LeBron) retire sooner rather than later. Because that ends badly for everyone. If you keep playing, there will come a time when Father Time will kick your ass. He will always win.”

James signed a two-year, $104 million deal with the Lakers in July. With his son Bronny James recently joining the team, it’s understandable that the NBA’s all-time leading scorer would want to extend his time with Los Angeles.

Last season, James averaged 25.7 points, 8.3 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 71 games for the Lakers.

Although James has not yet announced when he will retire, the basketball legend’s future plans are sure to be exciting for fans. If Harrison’s story proves anything, it’s that James will never be too old to play college football.
