Firefighters clear hazards and debris at Homestead Complex

The Homestead Complex Fire includes seven fires totaling 5,832 acres and 31% overall containment. There are currently 771 personnel assigned to the complex. Fire managers continue to direct resources to the fires based on threats to property, infrastructure, industry and areas with the highest probability of success while ensuring the safety of firefighters and the public.

Today, firefighters will assess, evaluate and adjust actions in response to the impact of yesterday’s storm on the fire, including safety concerns related to road conditions, tree hazards and debris. Once firefighters assess the situation in the fire area, a plan to safely resume firefighting operations will be put into action. Firefighters will be on the lookout for new lightning-caused fires and will be available as the first attack resource for the North Umpqua Ranger District north of Highway 138, coordinating response with local fire resources.

On the No Man (1,899 acres) and Salmon 33 (250 acres) firesThe fire group attempted a planned tactical burnout operation on the south flank, but soon decided to wait until fire conditions improved enough to establish a clean burn. Additionally, crews continued to improve emergency and primary lines for both fires prior to the storm.

On the Horse Heaven Creek Fire (2,240 ac.)On the north flank, crews looked for opportunities to build direct handlines, including establishing control lines around a “spill point” in the northwest corner of the fire near Horse Heaven Creek. Work continued on the south flank to clean up, hold and improve handlines. Work also continued to build and improve contingency lines on the west, north and east flanks of the fire. Crews have completed cleanup on a small fire in the southwest corner of the fire.

To the Bullpup Fire (456 ac.) and the Fuller Lake Fire (383 ac.), Crews continued to control the fire along 300 Road on the east flanks of both fires. Road work continued to improve emergency lanes across 300 and 5850 roads. The Reynolds Butte fire (335 ac) continued to show little activity as crews continued cleanup.
