Women’s HoopDirt | Woodside promoted to assistant head coach for women’s basketball at St. Joe’s (ME)

Saint Joseph’s College of Maine is proud to announce the promotion of Chris Woodside to associate head coach of the women’s basketball team. Woodside, who has served as an assistant coach with the Monks since 2020, will take on an expanded role under the leadership of longtime head coach Mike McDevitt.

Coach Woodside brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having built a diverse background in sports leadership and coaching over the past decade. His journey began at just 18 years old, coaching recreational, travel and AAU basketball during his college years. After earning his Masters degree from the University of Connecticut, he quickly established himself as a high school coach, leading the Calais Varsity Boys to a conference championship and a Class C state championship in just two seasons.

Woodside’s success at Calais led him to Schreiner University, where he led the men’s basketball team to its first-ever conference championship while serving as a leadership coach for several teams. When he returned to Maine in 2017, he took the reins as head coach of the girls’ basketball team at John Bapst High School, where his teams regularly competed in tournaments.

In 2020, while completing his educational doctorate in sport leadership, Woodside joined Saint Joseph’s College as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team. He also became a professor of sport management and co-facilitator of the Monk Leadership Academy, where he continues to teach valuable leadership and sport skills.

Since arriving at Saint Joseph’s for the 2020 season, Coach Woodside has helped the Monks to a 71-20 overall record and secured two Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship titles.

Commenting on his promotion, Coach Woodside said, “I am incredibly honored that Coach McDevitt has promoted me to this role. Being an Associate Head Coach is a great professional accomplishment and even greater for me than a Hall of Fame coach like Coach McDevitt felt I deserved. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him, our other assistants and our great student-athletes over the past four years. The Saint Joseph’s Monks women’s basketball team has a high standard of excellence and I am proud to continue to be a part of it.”

Woodside added, “Ten years ago, I first served as head coach of the Calais High School basketball team. As I look back on my career, I am proud that so many different administrators, coaches, athletes and parents have trusted me to help student-athletes grow both on and off the court. I plan to honor that trust by continuing to grow as a coach and finding new ways to help my student-athletes in the future.”

Head coach Mike McDevitt, who begins his 33rd season with the Monks, expressed his confidence in Woodside’s promotion, stating, “I am thrilled to promote Chris to assistant head coach. He has a tireless work ethic, tremendous knowledge of the game and brings excellent leadership and culture-building skills to our team.”

As associate head coach, Woodside will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Saint Joseph’s College women’s basketball team, continuing the program’s tradition of excellence while contributing his own expertise and passion to the team’s success.
