After you’ve hit the back-to-school sale with your kids, why not head home and take a trip through the wasteland with Furiosa?

George Miller’s latest Mad Max film leads a notable lineup of new movies on Netflix, Peacock, Max, Hulu, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Disney+ and Paramount+. August is packed with streaming options for film lovers of all tastes, from action comedies to all-star heist movies. There are recent theatrical releases, like Sydney Sweeney’s horror film and a biker gang drama starring Tom Hardy and Austin Butler, as well as original films like a super-spy romantic comedy starring Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg.

Here are 15 notable new movies you can stream now:

‘Abigail’

The over-the-top horror comedy stars Melissa Barrera, Kathryn Newton and Dan Stevens as members of a ragtag crew of kidnappers hired to look after a ballerina (Alisha Weir), who turns out—uh-oh!—to be a vicious vampire who turns the tables on them in a blood-soaked tale that’s far more convoluted than it seems.

“The Bikers”

Jeff Nichols’ gripping crime drama revolves around a Midwestern motorcycle club of misfits whose schemes turn criminal when they bring new blood into the fold. Austin Butler plays the wild troublemaker, Jodie Comer his concerned girlfriend, but Tom Hardy shines as the bikers’ moody, Brando-esque leader.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

The turbulent backstory of Charlize Theron’s heroine from Mad Max: Fury Road, now played by Anya Taylor-Joy, is told in this explosive, world-building epic. A charismatically evil Chris Hemsworth is a highlight in this adrenaline-fueled revenge thriller full of post-apocalyptic hot rods, awesome demolition derby massacres and insane confidence.

Where to watch: Max

“Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire”

More nostalgic than coherent, the latest Ghostbusters installment features a huge cast and plenty of retro elements. McKenna Grace leads the newer heroes and Bill Murray leads the old crew against the new big villain Garraka, a horned phantom who poses a cold existential threat to New York City (and pretty much all of humanity).

Where to watch: Netflix

‘Immaculate’

The First Omen isn’t the only option for nun horror in 2024. Sydney Sweeney stars in this unholy horror film as a young American novice who joins an Italian convent and experiences increasingly disturbing episodes, including the discovery that she’s pregnant. (Fun fact: she’s a virgin!) Things only get worse from there, building to a dark, demented climax.

Where to watch: Hulu

“The Instigators”

The heist comedy stars Matt Damon as a desperate father and Casey Affleck as a snarky ex-con who team up for a heist that goes wrong, leaving cops and crooks alike after them. There are problems, but not with the supporting cast, led by Hong Chau as the very understanding therapist to Damon’s fugitive father.

‘Jackpot!’

Paul Feig’s action comedy has a dystopian Looney Tunes feel to it, imagining a future Los Angeles where lottery winners must survive until sundown to keep their money. Awkwafina plays an actress fighting for her life, and John Cena is in genuinely silly spirit as the security agent hired to protect her.

Where to watch: Prime Video

“Planet of the Apes: Kingdom”

Will humans and apes ever get along? That existential question is revisited in the latest adventure from Planet of the Apes, a sprawling coming-of-age sci-fi story in which young chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague) goes on a quest to save his friends and family, teaming up with a mysterious girl named Mae (Freya Allan).

Where to watch: Hulu

“Knox is leaving”

Michael Keaton directs and plays a hitman diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a fast-onset and fatal form of dementia, in this clever crime thriller, who is determined to use his final days to help his estranged son (James Marsden), even though the police are also hot on his tail after a botched job.

Where to watch: Max

“The Chimera”

Josh O’Connor, one of the tennis star’s finest actors from Challengers, is also great in this Italian dramedy, playing a British grave robber who gets out of prison and travels to Italy to meet up with friends, find love and loot stolen artifacts in a narrative that turns into quite the emotional cautionary tale.

Where to watch: Hulu

‘Love lies bleeding’

A romantic fling bubbles between pumped-up Midwestern bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian) and introverted gym manager Lou (Kristen Stewart), but there’s also murderous trouble in this sensual and sweaty neo-noir thriller from director Rose Glass. If it’s not too early to talk about Oscar nominations, O’Brian’s performance as the star is phenomenal.

Where to watch: Max

‘A Life’

The moving historical drama tells the story of London real estate agent Nicholas Winton, who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis in Prague in 1938. Johnny Flynn plays Winton as a young man who rushes to the children’s aid, while Anthony Hopkins plays the older Nicholas, who remembers his humanitarian efforts and wishes he could have done more.

‘Tarot’

OK, it’s not the best, but kids looking to delve into the world of horror could do worse. Up-and-coming teens like Avantika (“Mean Girls”) and Jacob Batalon (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) star in the PG-13 film about college friends who use a cursed deck of tarot cards and discover that their eerie readings have bizarre and deadly consequences.

Where to watch: Netflix

“The Union”

A New Jersey construction worker (Mark Wahlberg) meets his high school sweetheart (Halle Berry) at a bar. He thinks she wants to get back together, but instead she’s now a super spy who recruits him for a dangerous mission to recover a stolen list of secret agents. Expect romantic comedies, global action and A-list flirtations.

Where to watch: Netflix

“Young Woman and the Sea”

Like Nyad, but better and far more thrilling. Former Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley is utterly captivating in this extremely Disneyfied biopic as pioneering athlete Trudy Ederle, who overcame Olympic disappointment, misogyny and jellyfish to become the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1926.
