Maharaj’s record as South Africa wins Windies series

Keshav Maharaj emerged as South Africa’s most successful spin bowler as he led his country to a thrilling 40-run victory over West Indies in the second Test at Georgetown.

The South African touring team claimed victory in three days after knocking out the West Indies on Saturday for 222, with a target of 263 to win.

The rain-affected first match in Trinidad ended in a draw, but the second Test victory means South Africa have now won ten series in a row against the Windies.

Maharaj, who was named man of the series, finished with 3-37, surpassing Hugh Tayfield’s tally of 170 Test wickets and setting a new standard for South African spin bowling.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rababa, who also took three wickets, now has 299 Test victims.

It was a close result for the touring team in a low-scoring game, with the Windies trailing by an agonisingly small margin.

They began their comeback with more than two overs remaining, but lost opener Mikyle Louis cheaply for four when he slammed a catch to Wiaan Mulder at the slip of Rabada.

Captain Kraigg Brathwaite was the next man to depart, but not before scoring 42 runs for the second wicket with Keacy Carty.

When experienced Jason Holder retired without scoring and the West Indies were left with 6-104, it seemed like a tough task for the home team.

However, Joshua da Silva and Gudakesh Motie produced the best Windies partnership of the series, scoring 77 more runs to reduce the target to 82 before Motie struck LBW to Maharaj for a Test-best score of 45.

Maharaj trapped Da Silva lbw for 27 and a brilliant one-handed pike catch by captain Temba Bavuma sent Shamar Joseph back before Maharaj had Jayden Seales caught by near-fielder David Bedingham.

South Africa had resumed play in the morning at 5-223 and with a lead of 239 runs, but the 22-year-old Seales ran through at the end, equalling his Test record of 6-61 as the last five wickets fell for 22 runs.
