MONCKS CORNER, SC – The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office has released the identity of a homeless man who was killed in front of Zaxby’s in Moncks Corner while attempting to cross the street.

According to coroner Darnell Hartwell, the deceased pedestrian was 62-year-old Jack Baron Yarborough.

Moncks Corner Police Chief Steve Young said his officers were called to the crash in front of 507 N. Hwy. 52 at 5:23 a.m. Saturday.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a driver was traveling northbound in a Chevrolet Silverado.
Hwy. 52, and struck Yarborough as he crossed the street in front of the restaurant, the police chief said.

Young said Yarborough was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured in the crash.

Investigators closed all lanes of North Highway 52 between Rembert C. Dennis Blvd. and Epson Plantation Dr.
while officers completed their investigation. The road was reopened at 7:11 a.m.

Young said the fatal crash was the second investigated by Moncks Corner police in 2024.
