It didn’t go quite according to plan, but the world’s largest rubber duck officially witnessed a renewal of vows! Amy Wadford and Leo Lawrence reaffirmed their wedding vows in front of the 60-foot-long Mama Duck on the afternoon of August 16. The inflatable duck had just arrived at Playland Beach in the early afternoon.

Shortly before the ceremony was scheduled, Mama Duck’s owner Craig Samborski discovered that four of the eight concrete blocks needed to secure Mama to the ground were missing. The inflation was delayed for over three hours, but the Manhattan couple was determined to go ahead with the renovations despite the wait.

After Samborski finally received the four missing blocks, Mama was inflated and the ceremony began. To match the chosen background, Wadford wore a headband with a little rubber duck on top. Even her bouquet of flowers was yellow to complement mom’s bright color.

Lawrence’s mother was present at the renewal ceremony, but she was certainly not the only spectator. While the majority of beachgoers avoided the duck and continued to smear on sunscreen, nearly 20 passersby on the boardwalk stopped and watched.

While mom watched over them, Wadford and Lawrence exchanged vows. Wadford presented her husband with his original wedding ring, which he had removed and given to her before the ceremony. Lawrence placed a new ring on his wife’s finger that she had purchased earlier in the day at the Playland gift shop. Wadford named her new ring the “Playland Ring” to celebrate this special day.

What’s next for Mama Duck now that she’s renewed her vows? Mama and her smaller counterpart Timmy will continue to stay at Playland Beach for the rest of the weekend before flying to Tusla, Oklahoma. There’s a chance of rain on Sunday, but Samborski said Mama actually enjoys the rain and it doesn’t affect her inflation.
