Ipswich news: Kieron Dyer on Kalvin Phillips loan deal

Former Ipswich Town midfielder Kieron Dyer believes Kalvin Phillips could be a big signing as the Premier League club move close to signing the England international on loan from the reigning champions. Manchester City.

Dyer, who also played for Newcastle United, West Ham and QPR in the top flight, appeared on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast to look ahead to the first weekend of the 2024-25 Premier League season.

“We’re talking about great managers here. David Moyes is a great manager. He had him at West Ham and couldn’t get the best out of him,” the former Ipswich player said of Phillips.

“Even if you look at the greatest manager Pep Guardiola, and yes they have Rodri, but at Man City everyone seems to succeed at some point. Usually they need a season to adapt and he hasn’t quite adapted.

“It will be a challenge for Kieran McKenna to get him going but if they can do that – Gareth Southgate has talked throughout the European Championships about how important he is for England.

“I’ve just mentioned the team (at Ipswich). They have no Premier League experience so it’s an unknown for all of them; for the fans, for Kieran, if they can improve their game.

“But we know that when Kalvin Phillips is at his best he can impress in the Premier League and on the international stage. This is a massive signing, probably the biggest in Ipswich’s history for 10, 15, 20 years.”
