Wellington City officials continue to work hard

The list of agenda items for the recent Wellington City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 14 was quite long. The council began by swearing in two new officers of the Wellington City Police Department (WCPD).

Lane Neese and Travis Gray were both sworn into the WCPD. Gray expressed his excitement to be a part of the WCPD and is a long-time Carbon County resident. Gray currently works full-time for the State of Utah and will be joining as a part-time officer.

Police Chief Tom Kosmack told the council that Gray won the award for general fitness and Neese won the award for shooting, and expressed how great it was that two of Wellington’s officers received awards.

Mayor Brad Timothy welcomed the new officers with some advice: “You all need to be a team and you can make a difference for Wellington. We need some people who can make a difference for Wellington and I believe you will, I really believe you can, so welcome aboard.”

The City of Wellington has been working diligently to update outdated city ordinances, documents and job titles. To assist in this effort, Council has agreed to contract Tim Johnson of Blue Ivy Professional Services. Johnson will provide assistance and guidance in updating outdated employee handbooks and creating job descriptions, bringing a wealth of knowledge to city officials.

The Council discussed job descriptions and training at length. Many officers felt that some things that were done previously were not done as they should have been done, but simply as they were done. The Council agreed that the creation of job descriptions would be a great help in understanding who is responsible for what.

Wellington City Treasurer Nicole Oveson explained that she has been in touch with other city officials in surrounding areas and they have been a great help with information and guidance. Oveson also explained that she has done quite a bit of research herself and spoke about the variety of training she has found that is available to city officials and encouraged all members to attend these trainings.
