94, of Mooresville, died August 15, 2024 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Mooresville. Phyllis was born August 10, 1930 in Brooklyn, Indiana, to the late Oscar Lee Copeland and Mildred “Tucker” Josephine (Keller) Copeland.

Phyllis was a lifelong resident of Morgan County and graduated from Mooresville High School in 1948. She worked as a bus driver for Mooresville Community Schools and for the Mooresville Branch Transportation Authority for 25 years before it closed. She was a longtime member of Friends Church in Mooresville and served as a trustee of White Lick Friends Cemetery. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Phyllis will be remembered for her beautiful quilts and her kind, generous nature in helping anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Edwin Smith, her brother Donald E. Copeland, and her daughter-in-law Kimberly Dawn Topie Smith.

She leaves behind her daughter Betty Jane Smith Heshelman (John), her son Dennis Edwin Smith, her brother Dwayne M. Copeland, four grandchildren (Christopher Heshelman, Aaron Heshelman, Kristy L. Smith and Tracey J. Durchholz) and ten great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Phyllis’ life on Monday, August 19th from 4-8 p.m. at the Carlisle Branson Funeral Service & Crematory. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 20th at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral service at White Lick Cemetery in Mooresville.
