John Cena recently spoke about the possibility of a WWE-centric movie and praised two films that portray the wrestling world properly. Cena was a guest on The Jimmy Kimmel Show with Jeff Goldblum and during their conversation he talked about what it’s like to tell wrestling stories on the big screen.

Filmmakers have approached this subject from many angles over the years, with some films being comedic and others very serious. He mentioned two specific films, “The Wrestler” and “The Iron Claw,” that take on wrestling storylines.

“Movies about wrestling are a difficult subject,” Cena said. “Movies like ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘The Iron Claw’ told the stories of the individuals really well.”

It’s such a larger than life thing and there are so many memorable names.”

Authentic wrestling stories

“The Wrestler” is a fictional story about a once great wrestler who wants his life back while struggling with his past mistakes.

This film was inspired by Jake Roberts, among others. The other film is The Iron Claw, which tells the tragic but inspirational story of Texas greats the Von Erich Family. These films resonated with fans because they were very authentic portrayals of real characters in pro wrestling.

They also told complicated stories within an industry where people often portray themselves as larger-than-life characters every week. “‘Iron Claw’ is about four star players in Texas,” Cena explained.

“The Wrestler is the story of a star player who has passed his prime and is trying to get his life back on track. It’s the story of a rock star who can’t get off the stage.”

Cena has seen these films done well, so he knows how great professional wrestling can be as cinema when done right with its rich history. Many fans hope to see more films like this one made. John Cena sees so much potential in the WWE library alone that he has every reason to be optimistic about future wrestling projects.

“Wrestling, sports entertainment, WWE is like a treasure trove of stories,” Cena exclaimed. “When I see a well-made movie like ‘Iron Claw’ or ‘The Wrestler,’ it gives me hope that there are more stories to be told because there are so many stories in our library.”
