Man refuses to attend his best friend’s wedding after his companion was turned away

A man posted on Reddit that an argument broke out between the two because he was denied permission to attend his friend’s wedding.

The man begins his story by saying that his childhood best friend is getting married in a few months and that his current girlfriend has been causing tension between the two.

“Long story short, my childhood best friend is getting married to his fiancée in a few months. I say childhood best friend because we haven’t been that close since high school, so about 10 years ago. Also, no animosity or anything. We talk to each other often, have similar friend circles, etc. The problem is that my current girlfriend, who I was planning on bringing to the wedding as my chaperone, is his ex from 5 years ago,” the man revealed.

The man goes on to say that his best friend and his girlfriend were only together for six months and that after the breakup, the friend met his current fiancée.

“My girlfriend and him dated for about six months after high school, but it didn’t work out. My boyfriend broke up with her and immediately started dating his now fiancée. There was a little bit of drama at the time because my girlfriend somehow assumed he was talking to his fiancée while he was dating my girlfriend,” he said.

The man said he came to the wedding, but his companion was turned away.

“I electronically agreed and within 15 minutes I got a text saying I couldn’t bring my girlfriend. I was told/understood that it was his fiancée’s wish rather than his. Basically, I just wanted to see if I was justified in standing by my partner or if I should grit my teeth and go to an old friend/my friends’ wedding, all alone,” the man concludes.

In the comments section of the post, people agreed that the man was not in the wrong in this situation.

“Not allowed? Insecure ex-boyfriend who still needs to grow up,” read one comment.

“To be honest, I would advise against going. It seems to me that your relationship with your girlfriend is more important than the friendship that has drifted apart. I think you should tell him that you have to stick by your wife as he sticks by his and if he can’t understand that, that would be a good time to end the friendship at that point,” advised another.

“No, stay with your partner. It’s his wedding, not yours,” someone else added.
