US futures rise slightly as Walmart booms with upcoming retail sales and labor market data

Stock futures rose slightly on Thursday as Wall Street looked for two key signals on the health of the U.S. consumer as well as further insights into the labor market. Futures tied to the S&P 500 (ES=F) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq (NQ=F) rose 0.1 percent. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) were up 0.2 percent.

Earnings from retail giant Walmart (WMT) and the government’s monthly retail sales data were in focus early Thursday, both data points that could help answer growing questions about the resilience of U.S. consumers.

Walmart shares rose nearly 6% after delivering a mostly positive report in which the company reported both earnings and revenue. The company also raised its full-year guidance.

Retail sales, meanwhile, are due out at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect July to rise 0.3% month-on-month, up from June’s flat reading – which was better than expected.

Also in focus is the normally routine update on weekly unemployment numbers. Last week, they fell more than expected, sparking a market rally that continued throughout the week. As Josh Schafer of Yahoo Finance writes, the Fed will see the labor market as “the place where inflation starts to ease” in the near future.

After a brutal start to August, stocks soared, including in Wednesday’s session, after the consumer price index posted its smallest year-over-year increase since the start of 2021. The S&P 500 has almost completely recovered its losses from a sell-off that began earlier this month.

Live1 Update

  • Impressive quarter for Walmart

Walmart (WMT) shares are on an uptrend after another solid quarter.

Two things I’m thinking about before my live chat on Yahoo Finance at 9:10 a.m. ET with Walmart CFO John David Rainey.

First, Target’s (TGT) earnings next week are unlikely to be great. Walmart is announcing another strong quarter in grocery, while the non-commercial categories Target is known for are showing weakness.

And second, Walmart’s international business has really turned around. Don’t miss that business being a really nice tailwind for earnings in 2025.
