Louisiana TV host acquitted of child entertainment charges

Each of Louisiana’s largest cities has a television station that serves that community. Larger cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lafayette, Alexandria, Monroe and Lake Charles have multiple television stations that not only serve the information needs of those communities, but also provide a free source of entertainment.

As someone who has worked closely with news organizations for nearly 50 years, I can say that the goal of a newsgatherer is to report the story, not to “become the story.” However, there are times when those of us who work in radio or television find ourselves on the “other side” of the microphone or camera on television, respectively.

When a journalist becomes part of a news story, it often takes on a very different perspective than if the subject of the story were less well known to the general public. A media outlet that has one of its own people under fire must take special precautions to ensure that it presents the story to its audience without bias or prejudice.

One such Louisiana station that has had to walk this fine line in recent weeks is KTBS Television in Shreveport, Louisiana. Bill Lunn, a former anchor and news editor at that station, found himself at the center of some very heinous charges in May of this year.

According to Shreveport police, Lunn was investigated on charges of computer-assisted solicitation of minors. Those who brought the allegations to Shreveport police said Lunn interacted with a fake internet profile created to catch people who would commit sex crimes against underage children.

Lunn became involved in the case after he allegedly responded to a message sent through the fake profile that resulted in him, Lunn, being attacked. Shreveport police were called in when Lunn reported the attack.

According to information from Shreveport media, Lunn was attacked by the three men who created the fake profile. Officers examined the evidence provided by the three men and also the evidence provided by Lunn.

At the end of their investigation, Shreveport police concluded there was insufficient evidence to pursue the case. A police statement indicated that evidence presented to them during the investigation may have been altered or tampered with.

The outcome of the investigation clears Bill Lunn of any wrongdoing in this case. It is unclear whether charges will be brought against the three men who allegedly created the fake online profile and attacked Lunn in May of this year.

As a result of the investigation, Lunn resigned from his position at KTBS TV on June 3. This story will be continually updated. Check back later for further updates.
