South Africa captain Bavuma calls for merciless action

South African captain Temba Bavuma wants his batsmen to score faster when they face West Indies in the second match of their two-Test series which begins in Georgetown, Guyana.

The first Test in Port of Spain ended in a draw after rain curtailed play on three of the five days.

“The batters have to be a lot more ruthless. The guys who get the opportunity to play need to really step up and get a base score for the team which will give us a lot more time from a bowling point of view,” Bavuma said ahead of the match which starts on Thursday.

“Of course there was a bit of frustration that with a little more time a result would have been possible.”

The pitch is expected to be quiet in Guyana, as it was in Trinidad and Tobago, where South Africa tried to bowl out the West Indians in the last two sessions of the final day but fell five wickets short.

“I think the bowlers did their best considering what was in front of them. Keshav (Maharaj) did a miraculous job and basically bowled half the overs of the innings.”

Bavuma was one of three South Africans, along with Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs, to score a half-century in the first Test.

“The confidence in the team is growing, it’s a young, inexperienced team. I think we just need to work on it and put it all together. That’s what I think will make us a really formidable team,” added Bavuma.
