One dead after freight train collides with manure truck in Sheboygan County

SHERMAN CITY (WLUK) — A freight train collided with a manure truck in Sheboygan County on Wednesday, killing one person and causing a half-dozen train cars to derail.

It occurred shortly after 2:05 p.m. in the W5100 block of Abbott Drive, west of Highway 57, in the city of Sherman, which is in the southwestern part of the county.

According to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, the truck was traveling west on Abbott Drive when it crossed the Wisconsin Southern Railway and was struck by a northbound train. There is a “yield” sign at the intersection, officials say.

When the police arrived on the scene, the truck was lying on its side in the ditch. It was loaded with around 21,000 liters of liquid manure.

The train’s locomotive derailed along with six of its 22 wagons. Only one of the derailed wagons lost part of its load of plastic pellets.

The sheriff’s office said the accident did not pose a threat to the public.

The 66-year-old Kewaskum man who was driving the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

According to officials, the accident is currently being reconstructed by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Abbott Drive will remain closed westbound from State Highway 57 until the investigation is completed. Depending on the extent of the repairs, this may take several days.

Traffic coming from the west on Abbott Drive should turn south onto Allen Road.
