Jeanette Moy, Commissioner of the New York State Office of General Services, today announced that free outdoor movie nights will be held again on three consecutive Wednesday nights in Albany’s West Capitol Park. The Capitol Park After Dark film series features films for the whole family.

The film series begins promptly at 8 p.m. and includes screenings of:

• “Dial MURDER” on 21 August
• “Matilda” on 28 August
• “The Thin Man” on 4 September

Moviegoers should bring their own chairs or blankets.

Free popcorn from Jus Kickback Rentals is available while supplies last.

West Capitol Park is located in Albany between Washington Avenue and State Street and between South Swan Street and the New York State Capitol.

August 21 — “Dial M for Murder””

Roy Milland plays retired professional tennis player Tony Wendice, who is at the center of a murder plot gone wrong, in one of director Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest thrillers, from 1954. When he discovers that his wealthy wife Margot Wendice, played by Grace Kelly, has been having an affair, he thinks she is going to leave him. Tony then blackmails an old classmate into agreeing to murder her. But when the plan goes awry and his wife kills her would-be murderer, he devises a way to frame her for the murder.

28 August — “Matilda”

The film is an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 children’s novel Matilda and tells the story of a gifted girl who develops telekinetic powers and uses them to fight back against her unfriendly family and school principal. The film stars Mara Wilson as Matilda Wormwood, Danny DeVito as her father and Rhea Perlman as her mother. Embeth Davidtz plays Miss Jeniffer Honey, the kind teacher who inspires Matilda to stand up for herself, and Pam Ferris plays Agatha Trunchbull, the abusive headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School.

September 4 – “The Thin Man”

Directed by WS Van Dyke, this 1934 mystery comedy film based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles. Nick is a retired private detective who gave up his highly successful career when he married Nora, a wealthy heiress accustomed to high society. Nick and Nora, an upper-class couple, team up to investigate a murder case, mostly for fun. In 1997, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry for being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
