George Clooney says ‘miserable’ David O. Russell ‘made his life hell’

George Clooney is 63 years old and does things differently when it comes to acting. In a joint cover story for GQ magazine with his Wolf co-star Brad Pitt, the Oscar winner cited “time management” as a crucial factor in the projects he takes on at this stage of his career. If he goes away for six months to act, he’s not going to put himself through hell. Clooney said he only wants to work with “people who like what they do.”

“The older you get, the more your time management changes,” Clooney said. “Five months in your life is a lot. And so it’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m going to make a really good movie, like ‘Three Kings,’ and then I’m going to have a nasty guy like David O. Russell who’s going to make my life hell. Who’s going to make everyone on the crew’s life hell.’ It’s not worth it. Not at this stage of my life. Just to have a good product.”

Clooney starred in Three Kings alongside Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube. The 1999 war film is set at the end of the First Gulf War, when four American soldiers attempt to pull off a gold heist in the midst of the conflict. The film had an infamous production, as Clooney argued with Russell on set.

The duo’s on-set feud has been well documented over the years. Clooney once said that Russell was “screaming and yelling at people all day long” during the filming of Three Kings. Tensions reached a fever pitch when Russell allegedly got physical with an extra on set, prompting Clooney to fight with the director. The two reconciled years later.

“Look, there came a point where I just said to him, ‘Is this going to go on forever?’ We need to shake hands and put it behind us,” Clooney told ShowBiz 411 in 2014. “We’re put behind us. And that’s great.”

Clooney’s “Wolfs,” in which he plays a professional fixer forced to work with his rival (Pitt), will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival before opening in select theaters and on Apple TV+ in September. The actor also recently filmed Noah Baumbach’s new movie, in which he plays a movie star opposite Laura Dern and Adam Sandler.

“I remember talking to (Matt) Damon about it 25 years ago when he first had success with his film and won the Oscar,” Clooney told GQ. “I said, ‘You have to understand that a 10-year career at that level is an absolute jackpot.’ Nobody lasts much longer than that. So yeah, I’m surprised I still have the work.”

“Wolfs” will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on September 27. The film will be in theaters for a week starting September 20. For the actors’ entire latest cover story, visit GQ’s website.
