Training Camp Observation: Patriots offensive line struggles amid Eagles sack party

Training camp watch: Patriots offensive line struggles amid Eagles sack party Originally published on NBC Sports Boston

FOXBORO – It would be hard to top the performance of the Patriots offense during joint practice with the Eagles on Tuesday.

With Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye at center, they allowed more sacks (15) than passes to the man (14). On average, they received one penalty per ten offensive repetitions (seven in 70 games).

With Hunter Henry out injured, No. 2 tight end Austin Hooper picked up and dropped two passes, including one that was intercepted.

Maye dropped a snap, Brissett tripped and fell after taking a snap, and at one point Brissett’s lead unit had to return to the huddle after approaching the line of scrimmage.

It wasn’t pretty. So for Stock Watch, we’re starting our Stock Down category on Day 14 of Patriots training camp…

Inventory is decreasing

Starting guards

Both Mike Onwenu and Sidy Sow struggled to cope with the Eagles’ defensive line on Tuesday.

Jalen Carter was faster than Sow early in practice and was able to record a sack. He also allowed Josh Sweat to be pressured, leading to a throw from Brissett. Sow also split both of his 1-on-1 reps with Milton Williams and committed a false start penalty in 11-on-11 work.

Onwenu, on the other hand, took Carter down in a 1-on-1, but there were a few problems in the 11-on-1. He was thrown back by Carter, which led to a blocked run. He was also on hand for a sweat sack on a stunt where he ran inside and got past Onwenu. Two plays later, he was penalized for a false start.

Calvin Anderson, offensive tackle

The second-unit left tackle had his hands full on Tuesday, struggling with Nolan Smith in 1-on-1 play and then in full-team periods. He was penalized for holding on Mayes’ first dropback of the day and later allowed a couple of sacks from Smith.

Austin Hooper, tight end

Hooper had more to do when Henry was out, but he dropped a few passes, including a nice shoulder throw from Brissett that bounced out of his hands and was intercepted. He also dropped a short throw during the two-minute drill on first down when the Patriots were deep in Eagles territory.

Stock up

Jabrill Peppers, Security

In an environment like Tuesday, where competition is getting tougher, it wouldn’t have been hard to predict that Peppers would emerge as one of New England’s toughest defenders. He got on the nerves of the Eagles’ offensive linemen and consistently showed a grit that Philly offensive tackle Lane Johnson praised after practice.

“I think they’re tough,” Johnson said. “Really good players. Jabrill Peppers came out of the safety position and beat up a couple of guys.”

Jalen Reagor, wide receiver

Tough day for the Patriots offense, but their highlight came during the two-minute period with Brissett behind center. On a second attempt, Brissett found Reagor way down the left sideline for a big gain that put the Patriots in scoring position. They got to the eight-yard line after Brissett caught the Eagles for a too-man penalty and then hit DeMario Douglas for a short gain over the middle before stalling.

Additionally, Reagor appears to be the team’s best returnee option at this point in training camp.

Raekwon McMillan, linebacker

Would the Eagles approve of McMillan’s place on this list? Maybe not. They might have considered his outstanding play a stretch. But he did hurl a Philadelphia blocker backwards and straight into returner Isaiah Rodgers during a kickoff.

The collision forced a fumble by Rodgers, which would have been recovered by JaMycal Hasty and returned for a touchdown. Impressive performance from the Patriots linebacker, who has struggled with injuries over the past three seasons but is now fighting for a spot on the roster.
