Florida medical device maker pleads guilty to $2.4 million tax evasion – NBC 6 South Florida

A Florida man who manufactured and sold medical devices pleaded guilty to evading about $2.4 million in taxes on income from his business, authorities said.

Roger Whitman, 76, entered his guilty plea on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

Authorities said Whitman earned millions of dollars in gross revenue from the sale of the medical devices between 2002 and 2018, but had not filed an income tax return or paid any taxes since 2000.

In 2012, the IRS ordered Whitman to pay nearly $800,000 in taxes for tax years 2002 through 2009.

In order to conceal his income and assets, Whitman then set up a trust with his girlfriend acting as trustee.

Whitman’s girlfriend opened two bank accounts in the trust’s name, and Whitman transferred his income from the business to the trust’s bank accounts and used the funds in those accounts to pay personal expenses, authorities said.

Whitman caused the IRS a tax loss of over $2.4 million.

Whitman’s sentencing is scheduled for November 13. He faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison, plus probation and fines.
