Korean cheerleading drama “Victory” to be released in North America

Korean cheerleading movie victory is coming to U.S. theaters. Ahead of its upcoming South Korean release, the film was pre-sold to 815 Pictures by Seoul-based distribution company Finecut for a North American theatrical release.

Described as “an uplifting and heartwarming drama about a high school dance duo,” the film follows the cheerleaders who inspire a losing school football team and the surrounding village on a remote Korean island. Directed by Park Beom-su, known for Single in Seoul And Red CarpetThe film premiered as the opening title at the recent New York Asian Film Festival, where one of its stars, Lee Hye-ri, was honored with the event’s Screen International Rising Star Asia Award.

Finecut has also secured deals for the film across Asia, including with Sky Films Entertainment for Taiwan, Lumix Media for Vietnam, PT Prima Cinema Multimedia for Indonesia, House of M for Thailand, Emphasis Video Entertainment for in-flight distribution and Westec Media Limited for Cambodia.

victory will be released in North America on August 16, shortly after its debut in South Korea on August 14. Finecut says the other release dates in Asia will be spread out across August and September.

The rest of the cast includes: Park Se-wan (Life is beautiful) as the other member of the dance duo; Cho A-ram (from the TV series Thanks), as a former member of a cheerleading squad in Seoul who moves to the village; and Lee Jung Ha (from the Disney+ hit Relocation), in the role of a goalkeeper of the school football team that always loses.

Produced by Korea’s Annapurna Films under the direction of Lee Anna, the producer behind box office hits such as Sunny And Scandal maker, victory is presented by Mindmark, a content IP company of the Shinsegae Group. Mindmark is a financier and Korean distributor of local titles such as Brave citizen, Love Reset And Honey sweet. Recent works include Hur Jin-ho’s A normal family And Boss.
