US 12 Flea Market Heritage Trail Michigan

This weekend, traffic on the 200-mile US 12 route from Detroit to New Buffalo will be unusually heavy due to the annual US 12 garage sale.

  • Officially, the US 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale is known as “Michigan’s Longest Garage Sale.”
  • It has been held annually on the second weekend in August since 2003. The three-day event begins on Friday, August 9th and ends on Sunday, August 11th.
  • Hundreds of vendors will be selling goods from homes, farms and businesses along or just off the state highway, which is two lanes wide in most areas. In some areas there will be many vendors, while in some rural areas there will be none.
  • Built in 1825, US 12 is the second oldest highway in the country. It was the route of the buffalo and was used for over 10,000 years by the Sauk tribe, pioneers, stagecoaches and early motorists on an early route between Chicago and Detroit.
  • Sponsored by the US 12 Heritage Trail, it promises: “You’ll find everything from antiques, collectibles, furniture, tableware, fresh garden produce, homemade jams and jellies, live entertainment and much more. Perhaps even more interesting than the ‘treasures’ are the people you’ll meet along the way.”
  • The mainly rural road invites parking in the right of way, so please drive carefully and slowly. Watch for pedestrians and use extra caution when parking and crossing the highway during the sale.
  • A map of registered vendors is available online at https://www.us12heritagetrail.org/, but keep your eyes peeled. Remember, most vendors do not register.
