Georgia Tech beats Ohio State and three other schools to sign 5-star lineman

Josh Petty is staying close to home. The 6’5″, 260-pound offensive lineman from Roswell, Georgia, has officially committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The five-star prospect chose the Yellow Jackets over the Ohio State Buckeyes, Florida State Seminoles, Tennessee Volunteers and Stanford Cardinal.

This is a huge achievement for the ACC school, as Petty is now the second highest-rated recruit to ever commit to Georgia Tech. Former NFL and Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson was the last five-star recruit to sign with Georgia Tech. Of course, he was also the highest-rated prospect to play for the Yellow Jackets.

Petty is currently ranked as the second-best offensive tackle by 247 Sports and the fifth-best interior offensive lineman by On3.

In July, Florida State seemed to be in a good position, but Georgia Tech was always in the thick of it. As Petty’s signing deadline approached, the Ohio State Buckeyes reportedly put the pressure on the five-star talent. Last week, both Steve Wiltfong and Chad Simmons of On3 made predictions for the Yellow Jackets, a clear sign that the Buckeyes ultimately couldn’t compete.

Now that Petty has committed to Georgia Tech and will live just 30 minutes from campus, the Buckeyes can turn their attention to David Sanders Jr. The top offensive tackle in the class of 2025 will announce his commitment on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Sanders will choose between Ohio State, Tennessee, Nebraska and Georgia.

Sanders would be a key addition to the future of Ohio State’s offensive line. Ohio State fans can now wait and see if Justin Frye can make a big recruiting hit soon.
