Democratic Party strategist and former Bill Clinton adviser James Carville admitted he was at a loss and “at a loss” after President-elect Trump’s victory on Tuesday night. Depressed, he admitted: “I’m in a very, very dark tunnel right now.”

In a brief YouTube update, the 80-year-old pundit lamented that people chose to re-elect Trump despite his baggage, and claimed that after Trump’s victory he “revised” the Democratic Party’s strategy and his own view of America “evaluate”.

“I just have to get over the fact that I’m 80 years old and living in a country that has installed a criminal fanatic who has no idea what the world is like – who is the most provincial, secular person you could ever imagine “he said.

Carville was a prominent media presence throughout the 2024 presidential campaign. He advised his party on how to beat the former president and was critical of their messages, for example when they were seen as condescending to male voters.

Carville also predicted in recent weeks that Vice President Kamala Harris would defeat Trump. In late October, he wrote an op-ed for the New York Times titled “Three Reasons I’m Sure Kamala Harris Will Win.”

The strategist also told MSNBC on the Friday before Election Day that Harris would win, declaring, “She has more money, more energy, a more unified party, better surrogates and he’s totally crazy.”

Carville’s post Thursday morning suggested he was still trying to influence the election results, with Trump securing both the popular vote and Electoral College votes, delivering an unprecedented victory over Harris.

“I don’t know what percentage of this defeat was because we didn’t embrace the message of change or because we left something for too long – you know, there was a flaw in our strategy and our presentation,” Carville said.

He continued: “I need to reconsider. I’m sure I’ll figure something out to make myself feel good again, but right now, today, it’s hard.”

The strategist then added his frustration at the “tens of millions of people who fell for this shit.”

“It’s just depressing, but I’ll get out of it. But it is very difficult,” he said.

As the video continued, Carville’s disappointment with the results became more vivid and he also threw in a Trump/Hitler comparison.

“This guy got 50 percent! OK? One could argue that Hitler never reached 33 percent, OK? This is – this is scary that we’re coming here,” he said.

“I’m going to freak out about this, but I’m in a very, very dark tunnel right now,” Carville admitted.

The strategist then mentioned the other talented individuals in the Democratic Party that the party has underutilized in elections like these.

“(Kentucky Governor) Andy Beshear, (Pennsylvania Governor) Josh Shapiro, (Maryland Governor) Wes Moore, (Georgia Senator) Raphael Warnock, and there’s a lot more than that…The level of talent at the gubernatorial and Senatorial levels in the Democratic Party are extremely high, and we have done a good job so far of keeping that kind of articulation away from people,” Carville said.

Elsewhere, he fretted about all the “intangible advantages” the party had over Republicans that “meant nothing.”
