Schools respond to the effects of the mountain fire

The effects of the so-called mountain fire were felt in schools throughout the day on Wednesday. According to a statement from the Pleasant Valley School District, Camarillo Heights Elementary School was evacuated shortly after 12:30 p.m. and the remaining students were transported by bus to Monte Vista Middle School. The Oxnard Union High School District closed eight high schools — including Rancho Campana, Camarillo, Rio Mesa, Channel Islands, Del Sol, Hueneme, Oxnard and Pacifica — and transported Rancho Campana students to Camarillo High for pickup. Jesus Vaca, principal of Somis School, said in an interview earlier this afternoon that the 219-student campus was in the “happy part of town” and did not need to be evacuated. However, some students were expected to remain on campus after school ended because their families’ homes were within the evacuation zone.
