Hawks’ Risacher scores 33 points in best game to date

Year after year, teams draft No. 1 in the annual NBA Draft in hopes of securing consistent star talent.

On Wednesday night, the league’s most recent No. 1 pick, Atlanta Hawk Zaccharie Risacher, showed a glimpse of exactly that potential.

In 37 minutes in the starting lineup, Risacher scored an incredible 33 points on 11-for-18 shooting and added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. He finished the game as a +14 plus-minus and was obviously a key part of the Hawks’ five-point win over Eastern rival New York.

Every single scoring stat from Wednesday’s game either set or tied a career high for the NBA rookie.

Much of Risacher’s success came from beyond the arc, where he shot 60% on 10 attempts.

He started early and didn’t let up, coming off a screen just seconds into the game and scoring his first triple. He then shot the ball straight up, got to the rim with two voracious dunks and did a lot more en route to 22 first-half points. He even capped the game with two free throws, helping put the game out of reach for New York, which fell below .500 with the loss.

After the 33-point outburst, Risacher now leads all rookies with 12.0 per game. The Grizzlies duo of Jaylen Wells and Zach Edey are right behind at 10.9 and 10.8, respectively.

This season, Risacher is shooting just 38% overall, but has shown obvious talent on multiple occasions that the Hawks hope he can find consistency one day. At 1.90 m tall, Risacher was selected as a project winger, but is already a capable sniper and defender. He has functional athleticism and glides effortlessly around the court.

He’s fit in well alongside Trae Young so far, as he’s getting to know the ins and outs of the NBA without necessarily having to handle the ball often every night.

After a short losing streak midway through their nine games, the Hawks have now rebounded to win two games in their last three tries, including wins over the Knicks and Pelicans. Risacher scored double figures in both competitions.

The Hawks now face the Detroit Pistons on Friday, November 8th at 6 p.m
