Pistons fall in close loss to Hornets after Miller’s buzzer-beater

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Brandon Miller grabbed an offensive rebound at the buzzer to help the Charlotte Hornets to a thrilling 108-107 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Miles Bridges had 27 points and LaMelo Ball added 25 points on five 3-pointers for the Hornets, who ended a three-game losing streak. Miller finished with 19 points.

Cade Cunningham recorded a triple-double for Detroit with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Jaden Ivey added 21 points for the Pistons.

Miller’s putback avenged a big turnover just seconds earlier.

With the Hornets leading by one and trying to run out the clock, Miller was caught in a double team and the Pistons ripped the ball away from him.

Ronald Holland picked up the loose ball and drove from halfcourt for a layup with 6.3 seconds left to give the Pistons the lead and stun the home crowd.

But on Charlotte’s final possession, Miller grabbed Grant Williams’ missed three-pointer on the left side of the lane and quickly fired it back into the goal for the game-winning goal, only to be promptly mobbed by his teammates.

Takeaways

Pistons: Detroit had a big size advantage early in the game with Charlotte centers Mark Williams and Nick Richards sidelined due to injuries, but that was quickly wiped out after Jalen Duren left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

Hornets: They assumed at the start of the season that Ball, Miller and Bridges would score the majority of their points. For the first time this season, all three put together good numbers together.

Key moment

Ball returned a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left to give the Hornets the lead. He hit a layup 31 seconds later to extend the lead to 106-103.

Key statistics
