Trae Young tells New York fans to go home after Hawks win

Three years after a memorable playoff series, Trae Young is still finding a way to clash with New York Knicks fans.

The bad blood remains, even if the characters have largely changed. Above all, Young is still an important part of the rivalry and if there’s one thing he enjoys, it’s giving Knicks fans a little something extra every time they play.

The Atlanta Hawks guard had 23 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds in a 121-116 win Wednesday night against the visiting Knicks. According to ESPN Research, it was his seventh career game with 20 points and 10 assists against the Knicks (regular season and playoffs), the most against New York since Young entered the NBA in 2018-19.

During an on-court interview after the win, Young had a simple message for the New York fans at State Farm Arena.

“I hope these New York fans find their way to the exit very quickly,” he said. “Boo, get all you asses home.”

The Hawks amplified the trolling by resharing a post from the Atlanta Falcons celebrating their 27-21 win over the Dallas Cowboys. The original fan joke was transformed into a triple threat that, in one post, simultaneously mocked three of the sport’s largest fan bases: the Knicks, Cowboys and the New York Yankees. The timing was particularly poignant as it came just days after the Yankees’ World Series loss to the Dodgers.

Young has often been Enemy No. 1 for Knicks fans since the teams faced off in the first round of the 2021 Eastern Conference playoffs.

He averaged 29.2 points and 9.8 assists as Atlanta defeated New York in five games. At the end of Game 5, Young memorably bowed at center court and waved goodbye to the New York crowd after capping the game at Madison Square Garden.

Since then, Knicks fans have not been shy about how they have treated the All-Star guard, chanting “F—Trae Young” at various events, even when Young isn’t playing against them.

On an episode of Paul George’s podcast in August, Young called the chants “super fun” while recounting an interaction with a fan and his reaction to the crowd.

“I’ll never forget that little girl… she just gave me the finger, right behind the scorer’s table. … There are a lot of photos of me looking out in the crowd and just smiling,” Young said. “That’s my reaction. Just looking at all these people’s reactions just puts me off. I don’t do anything for ten minutes in the first quarter.”

New York will certainly remember Young’s trolling from Wednesday night. The Knicks and Hawks’ next game against each other will be on January 20th in New York.
