Golden policeman was killed in a traffic accident

Authorities confirmed that a Golden Police officer was killed in a traffic accident on Highway 58 on Nov. 6.

The officer’s name has not yet been released at the request of his family, the Golden Police Department said Nov. 6 at 9:30 p.m.

Around 5 p.m., the officer and two other people responded to a car accident on Highway 58 east of Washington Avenue. According to the Colorado State Patrol, which is leading the investigation, one officer in a patrol car was detained behind the crash while the other two responded on the road.

Another vehicle then approached the scene and struck the two GPD officers, pinning them underneath the original crash vehicle.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, CSP confirmed.

The third officer was uninjured, the city administration made clear.

CSP said the driver who allegedly hit the officers was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. However, the case is still under investigation.

Highway 58 was closed near Washington Avenue for several hours following the incident. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes until reopening.

Around 9:30 p.m., police officers, firefighters and other local emergency responders held a procession for the fallen officer from the scene of the accident to the Jefferson County Government Center.

Police Chief Joe Harvey said he wanted to respect the family’s wishes not to release the fallen officer’s name yet, but confirmed that he was 33, married and a U.S. military veteran.

“On the inside, he is survived by 71 members of this (GPD) family who love and care for him deeply,” Harvey continued. “…I want to thank all of my brothers and sisters in law enforcement who have offered me their support.”

Harvey and the department added that this loss “represents a deep tragedy for (the officer’s) family, his colleagues and the entire Golden community” and asked Jefferson County residents to keep his loved ones in their thoughts.

Details of any memorial services will be announced at a later date.
