Redick on why Russell didn’t play at No. 4: ‘Competition level’

The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 131-114 on Wednesday night as they try to overcome a pretty difficult wave of injuries. One man who hasn’t been injured, however, is starter D’Angelo Russell, although he did see his minutes cut on Wednesday – Russell exited the game with 5:54 left in the third quarter and did not return to the game The game only took place in the evening at 9:33 p.m.

New Lakers coach JJ Redick decided to end the game with Gabe Vincent on the court, and after the game he was asked why he left Russell on the bench. As he explained, part of him just wanted to see what Vincent gave him, but there were some things about Russell that he didn’t like to see.

“Competition level, attention to detail, some of the things we’ve been talking to him about for a few weeks and sometimes he’s been really good at it, and sometimes it’s just that he goes back to certain habits,” Redick told the press after Play at 3:05 in the video above. “It wasn’t a punishment, it just felt like we had a chance to win this game. That was the path we wanted to take. “Gabe was fantastic in the first half, especially defensively, and I just wanted to see what that looked like.”

Russell went 4-of-12 from the field and had 12 points, three assists and two steals before his night came to an end.
