Ventura County will receive assistance from the federal government to combat the rapidly advancing disaster Mountain fire near Camarillo and Moorpark.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved the use of federal funds from the Fire Management Assistance Grant. According to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, this will provide the resources needed to put out the flames that have already burned several homes and are threatening thousands more.

“This is a dangerous fire that is spreading rapidly and threatening lives,” Newsom said. “State resources have been mobilized to protect communities, and this federal support from the Biden-Harris Administration will give state and local firefighters the resources they need to save lives and property as they continue to fight this aggressive fire.” fight.”

The Mountain Fire started Wednesday morning and quickly grew exponentially due to strong winds. By afternoon, the flames had burned more than 10,400 acres with zero containment possible.

As the wildfire swept through neighborhoods, firefighters focused on life-saving efforts, said firefighter Andrew Dowd.

“Our top priority here at Ventura County Fire in responding to this incident is life safety,” Dowd said. “And we urge all residents in affected areas to ensure they follow evacuation orders. That is our top priority.”

According to the fire department, several people suffered injuries that required hospitalization. Initially nothing was known about the condition of the victims.

Newsom’s office said the federal program will allow local, state and tribal governments to be reimbursed for 75% of their firefighting costs. FEMA has approved nine FMAG requests to California to help communities in 2024.
