Latest updates after polls close in Georgia; The first states called for a presidential race

In North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia, state polling stations are about to close.

Like Georgia, North Carolina is one of the most important swing states for which both Trump and Harris are fighting. North Carolina shares many demographic and political similarities with its neighbor to the south, including a large pool of black voters who Harris hopes will turn out in the election. Trump will again try to increase his voting majority in many rural and suburban counties, while Harris will also target the economic hub of Charlotte and the Raleigh-Durham research triangle, where the banking, technology, education and insurance industries are major employers. Be patient while viewing the results. The first districts could quickly favor one candidate or another without providing an accurate picture of the overall situation.

North Carolina’s gubernatorial election has drawn national attention after CNN reported that Republican candidate Mark Robinson posted a series of sexist and racist comments on a porn website, including declaring himself a “Nazi.” Robinson denied making those comments, but he was already struggling in the race, due in part to a series of public statements he had already made, including questioning the extent of the Holocaust. If Democrat Josh Stein wins this contest with a clear victory, observers will no doubt be paying attention to whether the race may have had an impact on the presidential campaign.

Ohio used to be the ultimate swing state, but in recent election cycles it has become a Republican-leaning state. Neither Trump nor Harris spent much time there on the campaign trail. But if the margin seems particularly large for Trump or particularly narrow for Harris, that could be a broader signal.

Trump’s expected victory in Ohio creates additional headwinds for Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, who is running for re-election in the state and will rely on at least some of those Trump voters also voting for him. Brown is running against Republican Bernie Moreno.

There may be a quick decision in West Virginia, where Trump is heavily favored to win — and where Republicans are expected to flip outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin’s Senate seat.
