Dump truck driver charged after fatal accident

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – One person was killed and another was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) with critical injuries following a crash in Bellevue, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Charlotte Pike and Old Hickory Boulevard.

According to police, Freightliner dump truck driver Nicholas Sterling was running a red light heading south on Old Hickory Boulevard when he collided with the driver’s side of a Ford Focus heading east on Charlotte Pike.

According to the police report, the driver of the Ford Focus, Kendall Cartwright, 38, of Nashville, died at the scene of the accident while her passenger was taken to VUMC.

Investigators said Sterling, 23, smelled of alcohol on his breath and officers saw an open beer bottle in the bottom of the dump truck. Police said they obtained a search warrant for a blood sample from Sterling.

Sterling was also taken to VUMC with minor injuries. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into the Davidson County Jail on $40,000 bail, according to police.

Sterling is charged with intoxicated manslaughter and assault with a vehicle.
