Former UNC guard scores first NC State basketball points of season

Senior guard/forward Dontrez Styles, now two years removed from his second season as a UNC basketball player, started in the first regular season basketball game of his NC State career, a season-opening home game against the USC Upstate Spartans at the Lenovo Center on Monday evening.

And the 6-foot, 200-pound Styles, a former four-star recruit from Kinston, North Carolina, will go down in North Carolina State basketball history as the player who scored the first points in the official game Wolfpack’s 2024–25 debut scored. In addition, the 22-year-old made the first three-point shot of the game and was responsible for four of his team’s first six baskets made from the field.

A solid start indeed in an NC State basketball jersey.

At the time of this article’s publication, Styles had scored nine points and one rebound in his first seven minutes of play against the Spartans, shooting 4-5 from the field and 1-2 from downtown. The Wolfpack led 44-30 with a few minutes left in the first half.

Last season, after two seasons as a seldom-used reserve in Chapel Hill, Styles averaged 12.8 and 5.8 rebounds over 33.5 minutes per game as a full-time starter at Georgetown.

Dontrez Styles and Kevin Keatts’ eighth NC State basketball squad next hosts Presbyterian on Friday at 7 p.m. ET (ACC Network Extra).
