A little more than a week after a comedian’s joke that Puerto Rico was a “garbage island” at a Trump rally drew days of negative media attention, the former president held another rally in Reading, Pennsylvania, an area full of Latino pride.

Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city has historically been the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, but in recent decades has become home to the highest percentage of Hispanics in the commonwealth. According to a 2021 Reading Eagle report, about two-thirds of respondents identify as such.

During Monday’s rally, Trump invited Patty Morin to the stage. Morin’s daughter Rachel was raped and murdered in 2023 by a Salvadoran illegal immigrant wanted for murder in his home country.

Morin told the crowd that everyone in her town loved Rachel and credited Trump with saying, “When the just man reigns, the people rejoice.”

Rachel Morin was murdered in 2023 when Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez encountered her on a jogging trail in Harford County, Maryland.

Before Trump took the stage, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, gave a speech partly in Spanish — and noted that he never liked media translation.

In Spanish, or dialectically “Cuban,” as the representative joked, Rubio encouraged voters to turn out for Trump on Tuesday and laid out a positive vision for the mogul’s second term.

Trump later asked the crowd the same question as Ronald Reagan: “Are you doing better than you were four years ago?”

“They built this country; They will save this country too,” he said. “The ball is in our hands, it’s at the two-yard line, maybe the one-yard line.”

“Tomorrow you have to stand up and tell Kamala you’ve had enough…’You’re the most incompetent vice president we’ve ever had…Kamala, you’re fired – get the hell out of here,'” he boomed.

Trump said Harris had orchestrated the “greatest betrayal” of the American people before calling the US an “occupied country” due to illegal immigration.

Sen. Bob Casey, Jr., D-Pa., also criticized Trump after inviting challenger David McCormick to speak.

Trump characterized Casey – who has been in office since defeating Sen. Rick Santorum in 2006 – as a two-decade “survivor” who accomplished little other than keeping his job in Congress.

He seemed to suggest that Casey simply followed his namesake father’s coattails into office. The older Casey, known for Casey v. Planned Parenthood, was governor from 1987 to 1995.
