Rich Shertenlieb is out of WZLX due to budget cuts at iHeart and poor ratings

The status of co-host Michael Hurley and frequent third voice Emerson Lotzia has yet to be clarified, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Shertenlieb did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but confirmed his firing with a series of four screenshots of the text posted to Twitter/X on Monday afternoon.

“To say I’m disappointed is an understatement,” he wrote, praising his co-hosts and producer Kenny Young before concluding, “I loved the show.” I loved our listeners. And I miss you already.”

Shertenlieb, who split acrimoniously in November 2023 from longtime co-host Fred Toucher on Sports Hub’s highly successful show “Toucher and Rich,” debuted “The Rich Shertenlieb Show” in May, using many of the same or similar bits and segments that were popular on the Sports Hub.

But the new show never caught on in the highly competitive morning drive timeslot that includes The Sports Hub’s “Toucher and Hardy” and WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

In the last full review book for the summer, covering the period June 20th to September 20th. In 11, Shertenlieb’s show placed 14th with an astonishingly low 1.8 rating among men ages 25 to 54. “Toucher and Hardy” took first place (16.6), while Hill’s show took second place (11.9).

Even worse, WZLX’s overall share for its weekday programming was 8.1. On the radio, the morning show usually sets the tone for the day. In WZLX’s case, it was the only show that didn’t do well.

The next full assessments for the three-month fall period will be available on December 26th.

The show’s ratings were known to concern iHeart executives, who began making changes to the format, including adding music to each hour, which Shertenlieb did not want to do. But the short shelf life is startling, despite the sweeping staff cuts at iHeart that affected multiple stations and markets on Monday.

In his social media post, Shertenlieb admitted that he disagreed with the decision to add music and that he felt the program was gaining traction.

“When we launched the show in late May, the plan was simple,” he wrote. “We would use the summer months to build chemistry with the new cast, and in the fall and football season we would sound close to what our vision of the show would be.

“But just over two months into the show, management decided to change the format.

“They wanted music, I didn’t. However, despite my disagreement with the decision, I agreed to move forward and music was added.”

Shertenlieb left The Sports Hub after several contentious months between him and Toucher. A non-compete agreement kept him off Boston radio until the launch of his WZLX show in May.

Before the show’s debut, he told the Globe that he was grateful that iHeart allowed him to shape the show as he saw fit and hire the people he wanted, including Hurley, a relative radio newbie but someone who had been an entertaining guest with us over the years on Sports Hub programming.

“If this fails, my name will be on it, but you know what, it’s what I’ve always wanted,” Shertenlieb said back in May. “This is what I’ve worked towards my entire career and I’m glad ZLX and iHeart were able to make it happen for me.”
