Patchy rain and thunderstorms continue in Houston. Cold front expected later

HOUSTON – Spotty to scattered showers from the weekend will remain with us from Monday morning through the afternoon.

Actual activity increases Monday evening as a cold front approaches.

A cold front is approaching southeast Texas Monday night.
Showers and storms continue across southeast Texas Tuesday morning as a cold front moves east off the coast, where it stalls.

It will be windy ahead of the front and the winds will be so strong that the onshore current will result in coastal flood warnings until Tuesday morning.

If traveling along the coast, be aware that there may be flooding on the coast and roads.

Onshore winds lead to increased surf along the Texas coast. If you are in these coastal communities, be aware of coastal and road flooding.

There will be enough energy to produce strong to severe thunderstorms across Southeast Texas. The main impacts will be gusty winds and heavy rainfall.

The greatest chance of severe storms is north of Houston, where the threat level is 2/5.

The front will continue to move east into Tuesday morning, making for a soggy start to Election Day.

Tropical view:

Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 could develop into a tropical storm on Monday. As soon as it comes into being, it is called Rafael. The storm is expected to move into the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

The system will become a tropical storm early this week and will remain so as it approaches Cuba
The tropical system will briefly strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday as it moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The next development area is north of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. There is a 10% chance of this wave developing in the next seven days.

The cold front early in the week will help rein in temperatures Tuesday, keeping highs in the 70s. The chance of rain at the end of the week is far from washing out.

It rains the heaviest in the first week.
