Kelly Stafford opens up about her jealousy over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s NFL media frenzy

Kelly Stafford admitted she was jealous of the media frenzy surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce in the NFL that erupted last fall.

In an episode of The morning after On the podcast released on Thursday (October 31), Los Angeles Rams star Matthew Stafford’s wife admitted that her recent smart-ass remark about the NFL’s focus on Swift and Kelce was fueled by some jealousy. Before the 2024 football season, she had commented that she “didn’t want to see another four months of coverage of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.”

The mother of four tried to clear the air, saying she didn’t like the pop star at all.

“I feel like there’s just this…cloud hanging over this Taylor Swift thing,” she said. “I’ve never said I don’t like Taylor Swift – ever.”

She admitted that she was “kind of tired” of the NFL’s focus on Swift, thereby overshadowing the hard work of some NFL players. However, she emphasized that this issue is not the singer’s fault, but the NFL’s.

“Can she do something about it? No, she can’t,” she shared, noting that the media circus and the NFL’s deliberate business policy of engaging in it bothered her. “I was a little jealous of the fact that they were getting so much attention and suddenly the football game became a sideshow. So yeah, maybe I let the jealousy get the better of me.”

Kelly delved into her thought process and explained why the nonstop news coverage was getting under her skin.

“I asked myself, ‘Why did I feel like that?’ And that was really true, I had some jealousy issues over the fact that she suddenly became the leading lady in NFL football… or because of their relationship,” she explained. “And I watch my husband do his best, and I watch all these guys that play for the league do their best, and suddenly they’re like a supporting actor. That’s where something like this comes from.”

Although she struggles with feelings of envy, Stafford maintains that she and her family are fans of Swift’s music.

“I was a fan of hers when she was a country star because she and I are the same age, so I grew up listening to her music,” she said, adding that last month she welcomed her daughters Sawyer and Chandler, I took her, 7, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4, to see the pop star perform at her Eras Tour stop in New Orleans. She noted that the concert was an “experience of a lifetime.”

“I honestly think my girls are prouder of their dad for playing a sport that Taylor Swift loves,” she explained. “At the end of the day, I’m grateful for the whole thing.”
