Driver flees on foot after accident near Vass

A driver fled on foot after crashing just outside the Vass city limits Saturday afternoon. The single-vehicle crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vass-Carthage Road and Sandy Oak Road.

According to local authorities, the man was driving his Honda Passport west toward Carthage when he veered off the right side of the road and into the edge of the woods.

The vehicle continued through dense undergrowth and between small trees before it struck a group of small trees just off the road and came to a stop.

The Honda SUV was badly damaged and there were signs inside the vehicle that the driver may have been injured.

About an hour after the crash, authorities were able to arrest the driver from Candor on Sandy Oak Road. According to the NC Highway Patrol, the man was arrested for driving under the influence.

Units from the Whispering Pines and Vass police departments, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Highway Patrol assisted in the search for the driver before he was found.

The Cypress Pointe Fire Department and Moore County Emergency Services also responded to the scene.
