Malik Willis is back on call for the Green Bay Packers

Malik Willis won’t find out until Sunday afternoon whether he will start for Green Bay for the third time this season, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Friday afternoon.

Quarterback Jordan Love has a groin injury. He practiced limitedly on Thursday and Friday and his status for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions is in question.

“I think we’re going to do it the way we always do it,” LaFleur said. “We’ll give him time to play to see how he feels.”

Acquired in a trade with the Tennessee Titans on August 26, Willis was forced into Green Bay’s starting lineup for the second and third games of the season. The Packers defeated the Indianapolis Colts 16-10 on September 15th and the Titans 30-14 on September 22nd.

On Sunday, Willis took control of the Green Bay offense when Love went off with 11:41 left in the third quarter. The Packers scored two touchdowns and kicked a field goal on the final play of the game while Willis was on the field in a 30-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“You just have to be ready when the time comes and work hard every day to get better,” Willis said. “I think that’s more important than having confidence from a few wins. I mean, they’re different teams. Every team is different and every game is its own game.”

Willis said he doesn’t think about how his success as Love’s replacement might change his career path.

“I think it’s cool,” Willis said Wednesday. “It’s fun. I like football. … I mean, we still have a lot of games left this season. We have a game next week against a really good opponent. I feel like that’s what we need to focus on now and everything beyond that is pride.”

The former Auburn quarterback was selected in the third round by Liberty in the 2022 NFL Draft. In two seasons with Tennessee, he played in 11 games (with three starts), completed 35 of 66 passes for 350 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions, and ran for 114 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. Since joining Green Bay, Willis has completed 29 of 39 passes for 380 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions and has rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

“You have to know what you’re doing,” Willis said of the difference in his stats. “The only way to do that is to get reps. …

“I got reps when I got here and I had a chance to go out and show it. And over the last few years I’ve gotten more and more reps, whether they’re on the scout team or whatever. You’re going up against one of the best – they were the best defense last year, Tennessee. So I mean, more than anything, just taking these every day.”

Willis also believes that persevering in Tennessee helped him be more productive in Green Bay.

“I feel like these past times were more important than any times I will have in the future, more than anything else,” Willis said. “These times strengthen your faith in every sense of the word. I mean, when it’s easy and everything’s going well, you’re not so fixated on these things. You don’t even think about it. But when these times are tough and you have no one to pick you up, ask yourself: What do you have to lean on? And I’ve found what I can lean on and trust regardless – good, better, indifferent – so I don’t look at it as a basis for results.

“Sometimes the media takes it like this: ‘If you lose, you’re the worst in the world; If you win, you’re the best in the world. I’m just going to erase both of those and just go out there and have fun and enjoy this opportunity and this platform that God has given me and try to give him all the glory.”
