NYC Marathon: Dutchman Abdi Nageeye wins the exciting men’s race

CNN

Netherlands’ Abdi Nageeye won a thrilling men’s race at the New York City Marathon on Sunday, while Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui made her debut with a win in the women’s race.

Nageeye delivered a powerful sprint in the final stages of the race, moving ahead of 2022 winner Evans Chebet and crossing the finish line in a time of 2:07.39, six seconds faster than Chebet.

They were part of a strong group of six that appeared in the final 10 miles of the race and then gradually thinned out as each runner lost the pace. Defending champion Tamarit Tola was among them, but lost contact with the leaders with five miles to go and eventually finished in fourth place. Kenyan Albert Korir completed the men’s podium in third place.

There was also an exciting finish in the women’s race when Chepkirui accelerated again shortly before the finish and overtook her compatriot Hellen Obiri, the defending champion. Chepkirui clocked a time of 2:24.35, living up to her status as one of the pre-race favorites, while Obiri finished almost 15 seconds behind. Vivian Cheruiyot crossed the finish line in third place, making it a clean jump onto the podium for Kenya.

The elite men's runners set off from the starting line.

In the men’s wheelchair race, American Daniel Romanchuk took his first victory in the marathon since 2019, ending Swiss star Marcel Hug’s dominance of the event in recent years. Hug had won 16 marathons in a row, but faded early and could only finish fourth. Britain’s David Weir finished second, five seconds behind Romanchuk, while Japan’s Tomoki Suzuki finished third, a further seven seconds behind, after a thrilling sprint finish.

Meanwhile, Romanchuk’s compatriot Susannah Scaroni won the women’s wheelchair race by more than 10 minutes, marking the first time in the race’s history that Americans won both wheelchair races.

“It’s always special to be here in New York City,” Scaroni said, according to the AP. “I woke up today feeling great, I never take it for granted. As we got up the last hill we had a tailwind today. So I had a little more energy than usual on that hill.”
